Here I have found one of the best copies I can find of the Social Contract. It is a book that I published, the book that got me banished from France and ended making the biggest difference on society today. It is a long read but I would recommend it as it connects well to current happenings in the revolution.

This is arguably the thing that sparked the revolution and I think everyone involved should take the time to read it.

Final In-depth post!

Wow! Its our last in-depth post! It seems like not long ago that we got started. I have been really busy over the last two weeks with theatre, work, and TALONS. I have still had time to work on in-depth.

I finished the Khan Academy tutorial as an intro to coding in the HTML language, and I really enjoyed it! The thing about the HTML language is that it simply has more uses, the original reason I wanted to learn coding is because I thought it would have real life value in the job market, and I have done some research and HTML simply has more uses then Java.

Obviously I am not going to master the HTML language before in-depth but I think it’s want I want to invest my time into. I want to show some of my animations as well as what I am capable of with my HTML skills. As I have just finished my in-depth criteria I want to touch on a couple areas of the criteria.

 

  1. I regularly spent time with my mentor

(at least a few times each month) to get valuable feedback.

When it comes to getting feedback from my Mentor I have only met with Mr. Findley a couple times over the course of the project but with that being said I have been using many other of the resources available to me. I have been working with an expert in web design a little bit as well as a number of online support sites. Reddit and Quora.com are both great websites where you can ask questions to people who are going through the same things that you are learning and you can learn from them. Though I may not have met with Mr. Findley a few times per month I am constantly in contact with experts in the field online and in person.

  1. It was process-based, first-hand learning,

(not primarily research-based with internet or books)

While a majority of my project was based online it was still based on first hand learning. I have been taking course online and talking to people on the internet.

In Depth Post 5

 

As we have returned from spring break this week my spring break was very coding filled. I also just met with Mr. Findley to fill him in as well. So as this is the purpose of the blog post I am going to fill you all in!

So over the break I sat down to keep plowing through my textbook in Alice on my 6 hour drive into the interior to go skiing. In this chapter we went through variables, it’s very similar as to variables in any other subject like math. So you use the variable in a “if X is true then…” or “if X is false then”. That will start to come in handy as I make animations where you can interact with the environment. For example you can have different buttons to click, in this case it would be “if ‘button 1’ is true then…” and “if ‘button 2’ is true then…” It just allows for a more interactive platform to expand my reservoir of possible animations.

In other news while on spring break I met a family friend who designs websites for a living, his name is Alexander. I showed Alex the program of Alice and he was intrigued with my project. We talked about what I wanted to take out of the project which is something I have been thinking about for a month or so now. I told him about how I didn’t Alice having a lot of practical use, I think it’s a good intro to coding but you can’t really code anything with it other than animations. So we started talking about Web design which is done in another coding language called HTML. He also directed me to a website called codeacademy (essentially khan academy for coding). So I have been exploring that side of the coding world.

Alice mostly works with Java, Java is a very universal language but I ultimately don’t see myself using it for anything in the near future. I think HTML and knowing how to manipulate online text and design webpages is more useful real life skill.

I came into in-depth this year with very little understanding of coding, having only worked with it in ICT, Alice has showed me what’s under the hood, so to speak. Now I am ready to start on the more applicable, heavier stuff. That’s the main thing I talked to Mr. Findley about, he was in support of me perusing HTML and using the resources available to me. I think I will be looking more into web design for a couple weeks and seeing where that takes me. I will talk to Alexander if I have any questions as well as Mr. Findley. As he is my mentor (Alex said he would help me out but he is not a mentor as he is not willing to go through the criminal record check process).

So I don’t really know the direction I’m headed I am doing a 5 hour course on codeacademy and I will see what I think of that and check back next week!

 

In-Depth post 4

The last two weeks have gone really well! I am making great progress on the outline that I set out for myself. It is now week 8 and I just finished 2.7 and that is exactly where I wanted to be. Alice is a super fun program that I have really enjoyed working, learning, and playing with.

Because I haven’t really described Alice as a program, it is an animation program. It is meant to teach the coding language called Java. Coding is taught in the way that you control the characters and frames with code instead of by click and drag like other animation programs. I have found that Alice doesn’t have a lot of practical usage, as I am proficient with Animation as I took ICT 9 in grade 9. Alice is meant more to introduce me to coding as a concept and that it is doing. I don’t think finishing Alice will teach me much about coding, but what it does it makes it easier to get into the harder stuff. I am enjoying using the program so far though so that is good. I want to meet with Mr. Findley after Spring Break, as coding is a very self-guided project but I still think it’s a good idea to meet with him and fill him in on what I’ve done so far.

I also realise that I haven’t really been updating my blog with all of the tangible things that I have completed, so I have decided to go through that a little. So in chapter one of the book it goes over the basics, using code to input characters, how to select body parts and move them with two types of code called procedures and functions. It goes on to teach how to control where you characters look and what they say and think. Finally it shows you how to order you actions, allowing you to have a conversation between them (with private thought bubbles if needed) looking and the camera and each other. It also talks about how film works (as it’s an animation program). I mostly skim over the film related stuff in the book and focus on the coding related parts.

Chapter two focuses on something called Methods, there are a number of different methods used in Alice they are mostly used for organising your scenes and switching back and forth from shots. (Keep in mind it’s all done with code) So you take your scenes and actions and use Methods to sort them into different shots and scenes and use them when you need them. This helps for when you don’t want to re code something and can just replay something using a method. There are also methods that control camera angles. In chapter 2 there is a short film I made using the Methods, with Orge’s and Wizards and spells. With Methods and conversations with basic actions between the characters.

So with all that I have also been playing with the program, making myself familiar with the ins and outs and playing with it and making animations for fun. In the next two weeks, I plan on continuing my coding with Alice over spring break and ill check back in a couple weeks!

I saw Donald Trump the same way I think most other Canadians see him, an American politician who doesn’t really affect me. Someone whom I have had many laughs at his expense courtesy of comedians, my personal favorites John Oliver and John Stuart. As the election has continued, Americans stopped laughing and started looking into moving to Canada.

I have talked about it a lot in class, I just don’t get how Donald Trump can walk into American Politics, saying the things he says and do so well. So that’s what I decided to look into for this blog post. I started off the process by doing what I do for most other projects, I went online and looked up articles from both perspectives. First off there aren’t a whole lot of pro Donald Trump articles anywhere other than http://www.trump.com/biography/. I listened to “The Donald” himself, I listened to interviews and speeches he’s done in debates and rallies. Then I started reading articles that are anti Trump (of which there is no shortage).

As I am reading through the articles against Trump, it feels like homework. I’m reading through these articles at 9pm after a long ski day and it’s just dry. I mean sure as far as school subjects go I am engaged, but I keep thinking back to how easy it would be to just open up Netlfix and watch another season of the Office, essentially there are just other things I would rather be doing with my free time.

That’s the thing about Donald Trump, he is an engaging speaker. When I am listening to Donald Trump I am engaged (even with the unsettling Hilter-esq, but that’s a conversation for another time). That is the thing that makes Trump “refreshing” to politics, the average person doesn’t mind listening to him talk.

As I head down the highway on my 6 hour car ride on the way back from the interior, I read Julia and Kelvin’s blog post as I remembered that they had written their blog posts on Trump. One of the first things that caught my eye was Julia’s comment of Trump and the average person’s vote, she wrote “If every single person in America voted, I believe Trump would lose considerably.” As I have found Trump is an engaging speaker, I think he is capturing the votes of the people who normally don’t have any interest in politics. I believe that if the president of the US is going to be anyone other than Trump instead of pushing people to vote, we should find an engaging way to explain to the average person why Trump is not the answer to all of our problems. John Oliver did a really good job with his Donld Drumph episode, but I think there needs to be more, when I try to find anti Trump article, it needs to engage me and explain its point succinctly and clearly.

Another interesting aspect of Donald Trump is his platform. He has been accused of being a racist and homophobe and for good reason. I thought about it and decided that he represents the “but maybe” aspect of life as referred to by Louis ck. It’s a popular opinion that he represents how a lot of people feel but won’t admit to feeling. I think there is another aspect to it though, he outlines points that appeal to all political views. He has elements of his campaign that appeal to the entire political spectrum. He adjusts his speech to his audience, he appeals to people of every political background and adjusts his view to suit his audience.

Another thing that caught my eye was Kelvin bringing up the idea of Nuclear codes “I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t feel comfortable in handing nuclear launch codes over to ‘The Donald’ (which is under the assumption that he doesn’t blow up America before he blows up other countries).” It made me think of an interesting ethical conversation I had with some friends last week. We were debating using ethics in war and following the rules of war. The example used was if you were the United States and you had the choice between dropping a nuclear bomb and losing a war what would you choose? Amongst us we were pretty split, between ‘If you lose a war you’re screwed anyways, but if you win no one cares if you break the rules (see America vs Japan world war 2)’ and ‘you should follow ethical guidelines always, especially when you are putting thousands of innocent people’s lives on the line’.  Anyways this does relate back to Trump, you’ll see I promise. So America spends 664 billion dollars on military every year and untimely what is a high source of income for the US? Wars, starting wars, selling guns they’ve made billions off of wars and Donald Trump knows that. Knowing Donald Trump it is fair to assume that he will try to run America like a business, meaning if he feels like it, starting wars. Again knowing Donald Trump it is fair to assume that if you go back to the conversation I had with my friends about the ethics of war, it would be fair to assume that if push comes to shove Donald’s going to “bomb the shit out of ‘em”, so to speak.

If half of my group of educated mostly left wing-ish friends agree that they would rather break the rules of war to increase their chances of winning a war knowing that if they win it will be mostly forgiven. It doesn’t sound that farfetched that President Trump would be supported by his following in a similar situation. That’s great and all except for the fact that, if the US launches a nuclear bomb before the bomb even hits there will be another 6 or 7 headed back Americas way, enough countries have Nuclear weaponry to completely decimate the planet, that’s why those rules are in place.

Obviously this is all hypothetical and it’s not even something that Donald Trump has specifically addressed, but I think it’s a good example to think about that can apply to Donald Trump’s campaign “promises”, they may sound reasonable and even a good idea but some thought needs to be put into the big picture, is it really something we want to trust a person like Trump, to have such control?

All in all Donald Trump has a lot of interesting platform ideas and he is doing something that has never been done before in American Politics. I have really enjoyed breaking them down. In his Hitler-like speaking, to his ridiculous yet effective campaign. I think the biggest thing is to educate the public in an engaging way. Donald Trump is a very engaging person to watch so we need something that will show his bad side in an engaging way and actually think through his campaign promises and ideas before jumping in to support them.

In depth week 6

In depth week 6.

The last two weeks for in-depth I have done two exiting things: I have gotten familiar with the operating platform that Alice works on and I have set goals for when I want to get the textbook “done” by. I am looking to schedule a meeting with Mr. Findley in the next two weeks to check in and make sure I am on track, I also want him to go over the goals that I set (I will address them later).

The operating system of Alice is reasonably strait forward, the textbook helps with making it easier to understand. I have read through the first chapter of the textbook and I have worked on the concepts in the program itself. As I move forward, ideas are starting to pop up for my final presentation. I am coming up with ideas for programs I could design using Alice that I could show off on in-depth night. Though it is a long way away I think it’s still a good idea to start thinking about it now.

Over these last two weeks I made a personal decision that I am going to be carrying on coding for 26 weeks instead of the 19-20ish weeks that are provided in the standard in-depth. The reason for this is, I want my in-depth to count for 26 weeks for my Duke Of Edinburgh, for my applied skill. This project will take me into the summer and that is something that I’m okay with because so far it has been really interesting. Come in-depth night I will present what I have done and what I am planning to do, then carry it out over the summer.

I have found that I haven’t been as structured as I was while working with Jacob last year, so I have not gotten enough of the textbook done so far. Because of that I decided I needed to come up with a schedule to keep me on track as the project goes on.

I have set up a schedule that is ambitious and will make up for me being a little behind. I want to be done the first textbook by week 12 (in 6 weeks) leaving me room for the second textbook. Before in-depth night. Each textbook has 5 Units or Chapters, I am halfway done Chapter one at the moment so by week 8 I will be at Chapter 2.7. I will be at Chapter 4 at week 10 then I will do the last two chapters for week 12.

When I have met with Mr. Findley, what works well is that he is very clear, he communicates effectively with me in terms of his expectations, and how he would like the project to go from a mentor’s standpoint. The downfall of the mentor mentee relationship for this project is that learning to code is something that is very self-directed, Mr. Findley has given me the materials and told me to come to him if there are issues. The problem became that I was able to a relatively small amount of work, letting other classes and activities take priority. 6 weeks in, I am realising that for me to get done what I want to get done I will need to significantly pick up the pace. Mr. Findley has also been super busy with Drama related projects, as have I. With the Drama performances in week 2 then The Murder Mystery in week 5. That has restricted Mr. Findley’s availability at lunchtimes. I have also been busy with working in the Cafateria, Musical Theater lunch time rehearsals, and Adventure Trip meetings. So Mr. Findley and I unfortunately have not met as much as I would have liked to.

In-Depth Post 2

So first off I will fill you in on the updates that have happened in the last couple weeks of the project.

I met with Mr. Findley for the first time on Thursday January 21st. In preparation for the meeting I looked online just to educate myself and to see what I should be expecting. I looked at websites like codingacamy.com, which is a subscription based website that helps you with coding. I brought it up with Mr. Findley, he said it would be better for me to look into a program called Alice. He gave me two binders that he uses in his classes as an introduction to coding. The program Alice is described on the website is “an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student’s first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects.”

I have downloaded the program and have started to look through the first 2 chapters of the first binder. It is interesting and I really appreciate that it is understandable and does not jump too quickly into the difficult parts of coding. I value that and I think the material that Mr. Findley is going to provide me with will really help me out.

Moving forward Mr. Findley has expressed that it is going to be pretty easy to learn how to code on a self-directed project as there is a lot of really valuable material online. Lots of very valuable and accurate information and sources are available for free and Mr. Findley has said he is more than happy for me to come to him with questions and if I get stumped but a majority of this inpdepth will be self-guided and self-taught. Honestly that is something I am looking forward to trying as it is very different from my last indepth.

I am really looking forward to my indepth because I think it is a skill that I will benefit from having for the rest of my life. Mr. Findley though we have only met once is someone that I can tell knows what he’s doing and I have a lot of respect for him.
